Galveston, TX – Galveston is set to host a free international celebration of art and culture this weekend as the city highlights its partnership with Málaga, Spain, and unveils a new mural honoring Bernardo de Gálvez.
“Galveston Loves Málaga: An International Celebration of Art in the Parks” will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Menard Park, located at 2222 28th Street.
The event will celebrate art in Galveston’s public parks while recognizing the longstanding cultural and historical connection between Galveston and Málaga.
One of the main features of the celebration will be the official ribbon cutting for a new commemorative mural honoring Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish military leader whose contributions supported the American Revolution.
The mural was created by Málaga-based public artist Eduardo Luque Puertas, professionally known as “Lalone.” It was gifted by the City of Málaga to the City of Galveston as part of the De Gálvez 250 initiative and the international cultural exchange surrounding the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Málaga provided the mural design and artist support, including the artist’s travel, fees, accommodations and painting supplies. The City of Galveston coordinated the project locally and provided site preparation, equipment, logistical assistance and public programming.
The new mural is the second mural created this year by an international artist at Menard Park.
The celebration will also feature an art market, live music, spoken-word performances, family-friendly activities and opportunities for residents to support and experience Galveston’s creative community.
At 10:30 a.m., Mayor John Paul Listowski is scheduled to read an official proclamation recognizing the event. Immediately afterward, attendees will be able to watch a preview performance featuring two selections from the opera “Yo Solo,” presented in honor of Bernardo de Gálvez and his contributions to the American Revolution.
Galveston and Málaga officials are also expected to offer remarks during the event as the two cities continue their cultural exchange.
City Manager Brian Maxwell said the celebration provides an opportunity for Galveston residents to welcome an international artist, recognize an important part of American history and support local artists.
“This celebration gives our community an opportunity to welcome an international artist, recognize an important chapter of American history, support local creatives, and experience the many ways art brings public spaces to life,” Maxwell said.
The city is inviting residents and visitors to attend the event, which will be free and open to the community.
The celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Menard Park, with the mural ribbon cutting and other featured programming taking place throughout the event.
